Cambodia cuts school hours due to extreme heat

STORY: In the capital Phnom Penh, one student said the heat had been giving her headaches and made it hard to study.

All public schools are now required to operate from 7 to 10 a.m., a change which sees classes end an hour earlier. Additionally, afternoon sessions will commence one hour later from 2 to 5 p.m., according to an official statement issued on Tuesday (April 30).

Cambodia’s meteorology department forecast a high of 39 degrees Celsius (102.2°F) in Phnom Penh on Thursday.

One climate expert has attributed the excessive heat to climate change and the impact of a powerful El Niño in the western Pacific.
