Two sisters from Toronto have reportedly been arrested in Lagos, Nigeria, for allegedly attempting to blackmail a billionaire.

According to the news website Politics Nigeria, Jyoti and Kiran Matharoo are accused of running a now-defunct website called ‘Naijagistlive’ in an attempt to extort money from wealthy Nigerian men.

They were arrested at their hotel in Nigeria after billionaire businessman Femi Otedola reportedly filed a complaint against them. He claims the pair tried to blackmail him with evidence of him cheating on his wife.

When police searched phones and iPads belonging to the sisters, they apparently found evidence linking them to the website.

Otedola, a chairman for Forte Oil, is the third wealthiest person in Nigeria and the sixteenth richest man in Africa, according to a Forbes report from earlier this year.

The sisters, who have posted photos of their lavish lifestyle to Instagram, are also reportedly accused of cyberbullying more than 200 people based in various regions of Africa.

Politics Nigeria reports the sisters have pleaded not guilty and are scheduled to appear in court next month. However, it is not clear whether the two have been released on bail.

Global Affairs confirmed to the Toronto Star that consular services are being provided to two Canadian citizens in Nigeria.
