Cape Dorset liquor vote set for September

Iqaluit beer and wine store won't open this year, minister says

Residents in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, will go to the polls this fall to vote on whether to relax the community's liquor laws.

On Sept. 28, a poll will ask residents whether the hamlet should keep its current liquor restrictions or go with an unrestricted system, in which the community is subject only to the general liquor laws of Nunavut.

Under the current system, people receive import permits from a locally elected alcohol education committee.

Sixty per cent of voters need to vote in favour of the switch in order for it to take effect.

An advance poll will take place on Sept. 21.
