Case of the illegally dumped shingles solved in Corner Brook

A young man who didn't quite fulfil his chore of bringing shingles to the landfill is responsible for illegally dumping loads of roofing shingles in the parking lot of a ski lodge in Corner Brook.

A pile of roofing material was emptied in the parking lot of Blow Me Down Ski Club over the weekend.

After Shawn Leamon, general manager of the club, spoke about the trash on CBC's Corner Brook Morning Show, the culprit showed up with an apology.

The club said a father had asked his son to take a bunch of roofing shingles to the dump, but the young man and his friends ended up dumping the shingles in the parking lot instead.

Ongoing issue

Leamon said it's not the first time that illegally dumped trash has become an issue, with dog feces recently dropped near a community garden in the area.

"The week before that it was three to four garbage bags dumped with recycling and things [like] beer cans and bottles, it's an ongoing [problem]," he said.

The ski club's upper parking lot is remote, which is why Leamon believes it's an easy target for people who dump their garbage where it doesn't belong.

"This is not a dump and there are big significant fines to people who dump illegally," Leamon said. "The cost to dump that over to the dump, according to Mayor [Charles] Pender on Twitter, is $10."

As for the mess of shingles, the young man has promised to clean it up.
