Castle for sale: Live like royalty in L'Assomption for $489K

A retired entrepreneur and avid collector of antiques is looking to downsize and trade in his castle in L'Assomption, Que. for a condo in Spain.

Alfred Del Valle, 87, and his wife spent the last 40 years building and adding to their chateau in the town 45 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

Del Valle says it was always his dream to have his very own castle.

The sprawling home features fortress walls, 16th-century antiques, and 22-karat gold-plated decor.

"Even today, it's not finished," Del Valle says.

Del Valle and his wife, Claudette Veronneau, say it's time to move on. They're willing to part with their castle for only $489,000 – much less than Del Valle claims to have spent building it.

They say the winters in Canada are difficult, and they hope to buy a small condo in Spain.

The home is being shown to the first interested buyers this Friday.
