CBC's Marcy Markusa wins YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award

CBC Information Radio host, Marcy Markusa, won a YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award Wednesday night in the category of public awareness and communication.

Markusa is a Red River College graduate and has more than 20 years experience connecting the Winnipeg community through storytelling.

"I am deeply humbled by this tonight," Markusa said in her acceptance speech.

"I want to stand up for Winnipeg women tonight and say if you feel like you haven't found your voice yet there's plenty of time to find it, especially to all the young women in the room. I want to tell you than a chubby, anxious kid with chronic impetigo never thought she would be standing up here."

Markusa began working at CBC Manitoba in 2001 and took over as sole host of its flagship radio program, Information Radio, in 2013.

In the host's chair, Markusa led Information Radio to take the number-one spot in the Winnipeg market.

"I'm really proud to be hosting the morning show at CBC," Markusa said.

"What a joy it's been to do my job. I've been in media for 20 years and as I say I'm still finding my voice through yours. It's why it's worth getting up at 4 a.m."

Also nominated for the YMCA-YWCA award this year was CBC I-Team reporter Vera-Lynn Kubinec.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Awards. The awards honour women who make unique and exemplary contributions to the development of others and to their community.

This year's award ceremony was hosted by North of 60 actor and producer Tina Keeper at the RBC Convention Centre in downtown Winnipeg.
