Charlotte builder eyes Matthews for retail and medical center near Novant Health

A Charlotte development company is working to bring a new medical office and retail center to Matthews.

NAI Southern Real Estate submitted a zoning proposal to town officials for the project located at 1640 Matthews Township Parkway. The vacant property is east of the Novant Health Matthews Medical Center and near the Harris Teeter sign warehouse.

The development on 6.41 acres will include a 50,000 square-foot medical office building with two floors, 5,100 square feet for retail and 4,000 square feet for another building. More than 300 parking spaces will be required. A preliminary site plan indicates that one of the spaces is for a proposed bank.

The project was approved in September by the Matthews Board of Commissioners, according to town documents. Caldwell Rose, NAI Southern Real Estate president, declined to comment about construction plans for 2024 or future tenants.

It’s among several projects presented to Matthews officials this year. A huge endeavor underway is the Midfield Station development from Proffitt Dixon Partners, which is near a proposed light rail station. It includes 814 multi-family units, 200 single-family attached homes and more than 221,000 square-feet of non-residential retail space on 72 acres by Sports Parkway and Brigman Road.
