Charlotte man who went fishing with friends drowns at Jordan Lake

Authorities have identified a man who died at Jordan Lake in Chatham County on Saturday night as 25-year-old Pradip Kumar Bhujel of Charlotte.

Emergency responders were dispatched to a possible drowning shortly before midnight at the Jordan Lake Wildlife Area on N.C. 751, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said.

Bhujel had gone fishing with friends when eyewitnesses said he waded into the water and disappeared, according to a news release.

First responders included Chatham County Emergency Management, the North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, FirstHealth EMS, and the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Bhujel’s body was found, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the news release.

June is the deadliest month on NC waterways. Fatalities have climbed in the Charlotte area.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office will work with the medical examiner to investigate the incident.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Pradip Kumar Bhujel,” Sheriff Mike Roberson said in the release. “Our team is thoroughly investigating the incident to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic event.”

It was the second drowning at the lake in the past month.

Bryan Guzman, 16, of Winston-Salem, was celebrating a friend’s birthday when he went swimming near a picnic area off Beaver Creek Road and drowned, The News & Observer previously reported.
