An apartment building in the northeast of Charlottetown burned Monday night, but there were no serious injuries.

Fire alarms in the building went off about 1 a.m., said Charlottetown deputy fire chief Kent Mitchell, and everyone was able to get out.

The 20-unit building at 6 Elena Court, near the intersection on the bypass highway in East Royalty, had about 40 people living in it, according to Mitchell.

He was still on the scene at 7 a.m., and said the building is a write off.

Fire officials still do not know how the fire started. The fire inspector is on site but his work will have to wait until the fire is completely out.

There are still some hot spots in the building, and it is being torn down so firefighters can get water on them.

T3 Transit has rerouted some buses around the fire scene.
