Charlottetown Islanders hockey team hosts Prince Street school kids

Some Grade six students on P.E.I. get a chance to see a Charlottetown Islanders hockey game on Sunday.

Forty-three children from Prince Street Elementary School will watch the game from the arena's sky boxes.

Eight businesses donated their boxes for the game against the Halifax Mooseheads.

"Prince Street, being an inner-city school is a very diverse, kind of a cultural school and we just wanted to be able to reach out and give an experience to maybe a group of kids that might not even be able to attend a hockey game, let alone being able to watch it from one of the sky boxes," said Jason MacLean, director of sales and marketing for the Islanders.

The students are also getting free snacks, Islanders merchandise, a visit from some Islanders players, and a dressing-room tour.

Erin Johnston, Prince Street principal, says teaching students about relationships and community connections is an important part of their education.

"It was enthusiasm from the beginning, no question," said Johnston.

"But many didn't know what a sky box was, to be honest, so I had to explain what that was and sort of describe where you'd be and what it would look like so they were pretty excited. So many kids don't have experiences to build their interests and so many of our kids, in particular, just don't have those opportunities."
