Chris Pine is in his eclectic grandpa era — and loving it.

The star was spotted arriving for his Thursday, May 9, appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in what may be his most outlandish look yet — a turquoise checkered pajama set (featuring short shorts) and a navy blue bathrobe. During his segment, the 43-year-old actor opened up about his recent string of out-there looks, which have included teeny-tiny shorts and long hair.

When Kimmel, 56, asked Pine the reasoning behind the wardrobe shift, Pine first joked that it was due to “too many mushrooms.”

He then said, “It’s a comfort thing.”

“I like to have a good time,” Pine continued. “Life is too hard. If it’s gonna make you giggle to put on some funky linen pants…”

The actor was referring to his ensemble for the late-night show: a white linen set with a plunging v-neckline. The star accessorized with a gold medallion necklace and gold bracelets. His hair was also still in all its blonde, shaggy glory and he sported a salt-and-pepper beard.

Kimmel also brought up Pine’s look at the premiere of his new film Poolman, in which he plays  "pool guy" Darren Barrenman. The project also marks the star’s directorial debut.

For the April 24 premiere in Los Angeles, Pine stepped out in a tiny pair of shorts, an “I heart L.A.” T-shirt, hiker boots and long, blonde hair.

“That’s my personal T-shirt that’s also in the movie,” Pine shared when Kimmel showed the audience a photo of his out-of-the-box red carpet look. He then added that he’s owned the shirt for “like, 19 years.”

Pine said that the shorts belonged to him also.

“Those are my corduroy shorts that were, like, $5,” he said. “But I’ve spent about $150 trying to repair them as they’ve broken over the years.”

As for his penchant for short shorts, Pine said, “It’s almost summer!”

He also referenced one of his style icons, Tom Selleck.

“I’m a big fan of Tom Selleck and as we know, Tom Selleck liked a short short,” the actor shared.

Pine previously explained that his recent style of dressing was a nod to his latest project.

“The film I made is a joyful, silly, playful film and it just didn’t seem to be the right vibe if I showed up trying to strike Zoolander poses on the carpet,” he said in a May 1 interview with Today’s Savannah Guthrie. “So I decided to go all-in.”

Guthrie called the tactic “method promoting,” aka when an actor gets into the theme or character of a film by looking the part off-camera.

Pine even wore part of his Poolman costume during his Today appearance.

"This is actually the blazer that I wore in the film,” he said, referring to his checkered jacket. He also wore the L.A. T-shirt from the movie.

“My character’s a big city council gadfly, as they call them, because the city council all the time argues for more public transportation (because L.A. obviously struggles with that) and better composting,” he said.

Poolman hits theaters on May 10.
