City again cracking down on school-zone parking

School parking enforcement blitz continues

A morning parking blitz at an east-end elementary school resulted in just two tickets to parents, who were warned about the crackdown in advance.

Parking enforcement officers were at St. John Vianney Elementary School in Windsor's east end to reduce congestion in the area during the morning drop-off time Wednesday.

This is the second school to be blitzed in the last week after officers handed out 35 tickets at Vincent Massey Secondary School last week.

Officers handed out two tickets to drivers on Wednesday, which is an indication people dropping off students are getting the message, according to Bill Kravolensky, the city's supervisor of parking enforcement.

"What we're trying to clean up these areas [and] get the kids in," he said.

The city says congestion around schools at drop-off and pick-up times is a safety issue for students and people who live nearby.

Drivers clog up the streets in the mornings, blocking buses and making students late. In the evenings, residents usually feel the pinch from clogged up streets, which can be a safety hazard.

"If there was a safety concern in the neighbourhood — ambulance, fire engine, Windsor police, whatever — they could not get down the streets at all," Kravolensky said.
