City launches free clean-up trailer for community groups

THUNDER BAY — The city has officially launched its community clean-up trailer, which community groups can rent for free.

At the first clean-up at the Neebing River floodway on Isabel Street on Wednesday, Stephen Margarit, chair of the city's Clean, Green and Beautiful Committee, said renting the unit and disposing of community garbage has been made easy with the trailer.

"Community groups, neighbours, and different organizations could put in a request with the city, and they'll get this trailer. It's great because it's got all the supplies they'll need to do a community clean-up.

"They'll pick up the litter and then leave it in the trailer and the city comes to take it away free of charge. It's really a great way to get that civic pride in our community to get people to come together."

Margarit said the trailer was paid for with the city's emerging projects fund.

"We had some great projects last year, and this is just one of those projects to make our city clean, green, and beautiful."

Ryan Mackett, communications manager with the Lakehead Regional Conservation Authority, said the LRCA was the perfect fit to help the city launch the trailer.

"The more people who all kind of do their own parts and help - it alleviates some of the stresses on the environment. Things get done better and faster when more people are working together.

"So this is entirely a community-based project, and we're really hoping that the community will help utilize this trailer."
