Claude Gauthier had Mars One mission interview on weekend

Claude Gauthier will soon know if he's headed to Mars.

Gauthier was one of more than 200,000 people from 140 countries that initially applied to join Mars One — a $6-billion project that plans to establish a permanent human colony on Mars by 2025.

The list is currently narrowed down to 660 people and by Feb. 16, it could be down to 100.

Gauthier, a University of Moncton science professor, had his first interview with organizers on the weekend. He says he was tested on intelligence, knowledge, adaptability and personality.

Gauthier says the idea of the mission has been on his mind non-stop for the last six months, so he's pleased to have conducted the interview.

"I'm very happy that now its over," he said.

The 61-year-old is one of 54 Canadians shortlisted for the Mars One mission.

Mars One is planning to send its first crew off to the Red Planet in 2024. Crews of four will follow every two years.
