Co-op beef products added to E. coli recall

Products containing ground beef that were sold at Co-op stores in the N.W.T. and Yukon have been added to a nationwide E. coli recall.

The recall has been expanded to include 56 beef products such as fresh and frozen ground beef, hamburger patties, sausages and pepperoni distributed by Co-op stores in N.W.T. and Yukon, as well as Western provinces and Ontario. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has a complete list of the products on its website.

On Monday, the Alberta manufacturer voluntarily recalled ground beef products sold across Canada because they may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. The list of products affected also include ground beef sold at Northern stores in the N.W.T. and in Arviat, Nunavut.

There have been no reported illnesses from the consumption of these products.

Meat contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 might not look or smell spoiled, according to the CFIA. Consumption of beef contaminated with the bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.
