New college basketball rankings are here. Kentucky-Miami will be battle of top-15 teams.

The Kentucky Wildcats are set for their second major test of the 2023-24 college basketball season Tuesday night.

This one will be a battle of top-15 teams.

UK (5-1) moved up four spots to No. 12 in the new Associated Press Top 25 poll released Monday afternoon, and the Cats will face the No. 8-ranked Miami Hurricanes (5-0) on Tuesday in Rupp Arena in the first installment of the ACC/SEC Challenge.

It will be Kentucky’s second game this season against a ranked team. The Cats lost 89-84 to No. 1 Kansas in the Champions Classic on Nov. 14, and their other five games have all come against teams situated outside of the national top 100 in the latest KenPom ratings.

The Jayhawks are No. 1 no more, however, dropping to No. 5 in the new rankings following a 73-59 loss to Marquette in the Maui Invitational last week.

Purdue, led by reigning national player of the year Zach Edey, is the new No. 1 team in the country, earning 60 of 63 first-place votes in Monday’s poll. The Boilermakers (6-0) beat Gonzaga, Tennessee and Marquette — all teams ranked in the top 11 last week — in the Maui Invitational and will have high-profile, nonconference games against Alabama and Arizona coming up next month.

Arizona is No. 2 in the new rankings, followed by Marquette at No. 3, UConn at No. 4 and Kansas rounding out the top five. The rest of the top 10 consists of No. 6 Houston, No. 7 Duke, No. 8 Miami, No. 9 Baylor and No. 10 Tennessee.

Kentucky’s rise coincided with a two-win week that featured a 96-88 overtime victory over Saint Joseph’s and then a 118-82 shellacking of Marshall, the latter setting a new record for most points scored by the Wildcats during John Calipari’s 15 seasons as head coach.

The UK-Miami matchup Tuesday night should also be an offensive showcase. The Cats and Canes are fourth and 13th nationally in scoring offense, averaging 94.3 and 89.0 points per game, respectively. Miami also leads the country in 3-point shooting (45.8%), while UK is fourth in that stat (42.5%) and second only to BYU with 12.3 made 3-pointers per game.

Kentucky will also play UNC Wilmington in Rupp Arena on Saturday, and it’s possible that five-star freshman 7-footer Aaron Bradshaw could make his college basketball debut in that game. Bradshaw has been sidelined with a foot injury and joined UK’s practices for the first time last week, though he’s not expected to play against Miami on Tuesday night.

Games featuring ranked teams in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge include:

  • Georgia Tech vs. No. 21 Mississippi State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (ACC Network).

  • No. 12 Kentucky vs. No. 8 Miami on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. (ESPN).

  • No. 23 Alabama vs. Clemson on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. (ESPN).

  • No. 17 North Carolina vs. No. 10 Tennessee on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. (ESPN).

  • Virginia vs. No. 14 Texas A&M on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. (ESPN2).

  • Arkansas vs. No. 7 Duke on Wednesday at 9:15 p.m. (ESPN).

The ACC/SEC Challenge is replacing the long-running series between Big 12 and SEC teams and will include 14 games over two days. Louisville, which finished last in the 15-team ACC last season, is the only school from either conference that will not be included this year. The SEC has just 14 teams.

U of L, which is off to a 3-3 start in its second season under coach Kenny Payne, will instead host Bellarmine (2-5) at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

After this week, Kentucky will still have eight regular-season games against teams currently ranked in the Top 25, with nonconference matchups against No. 17 North Carolina (Dec. 16 in Atlanta) and No. 11 Gonzaga (Feb. 10 in Lexington), two games each against Tennessee and Mississippi State, a home game against Alabama and a road game at Texas A&M. UK will also play Arkansas twice. The Razorbacks fell out of the Top 25 this week.
