Nine schools spanning the length of Conception Bay South are closed Wednesday due to a water main break in the centre of town.

The break happened Tuesday afternoon on Anchorage Road in the Long Pond area of Conception Bay South.

Repairs were expected to be completed within a few hours, according to an initial press release from the town, but an update Wednesday morning said the water outage is expected to continue into the day.

Shortly after noon the town issued another update, stating emergency repairs are continuing and another update is expected at 4 p.m.

Ranging from Topsail to Upper Gullies, the affected schools are:

  • Upper Gullies Elementary.

  • Admiral's Academy.

  • St Edwards Elementary.

  • St George's Elementary.

  • Frank Roberts Junior High.

  • Queen Elizabeth High School.

  • Topsail Elementary.

  • Holy Spirit High School.

  • Villa Nova Junior High.

The town also closed the C.B.S. Arena and Robert French Memorial Stadium, as well as the recreation complex as of Tuesday evening. Recreation facilities will remain closed until at least 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Drivers are also warned to proceed with caution around the area of Anchorage Road and to anticipate delays as crews work to repair the water main.

The town says residents should avoid doing laundry for the first hour after water pressure returns to avoid staining from dirt in the lines.
