Cougar helicopter aborts takeoff after engine failure

Cougar helicopter grounded at Hibernia after engine-trouble alert

A Cougar helicopter taking eight oil workers offshore from St. John's had to abort a takeoff earlier this week after an engine failure.

On Monday, the flight for Husky Energy had been cleared for takeoff, but shortly afterwards the pilot reported an engine failure.

The offshore petroleum board said the chopper was hovering about three metres off the runway at the time, but was able to land safely.

A preliminary report from Transport Canada says the engine failure was detected before liftoff.

The pilot called the tower and asked staff there to look out for smoke as the helicopter taxied back to the terminal.

They didn't see anything unusual, but a part from the helicopter was later found on the grass near the runway.

No one was injured in the incident.
