Council Approves Execulink Transmitter Relocation

SOUTHWEST MIDDLESEX - Council has greenlit the relocation of an Execulink Telecom transmitter to the Melbourne Water Tower to maintain uninterrupted internet service for local residents. The decision was made during the council meeting on May 8, following a report from Jeff Brick, the Interim Chief Administrative Officer.

The need for relocation arose after it was announced that the current site of the transmitter, a grain leg at the former Solio property, is set to be dismantled. Brick emphasized the importance of the transmitter in providing internet connectivity, especially to those on the outskirts of broadband coverage. With no viable alternatives in the flat terrain of the area, the Melbourne Water Tower was identified as the optimal new location.

During the council meeting, Brick detailed the absence of other options for relocating the transmitter, highlighting its significance in Execulink's network. The transmitter not only supports the local community but also services areas beyond the municipal boundary. It is seen as a crucial stopgap until broader fiber optic deployment enhances the region's internet infrastructure.

Technical evaluations have confirmed that the water tower can accommodate the transmitter without causing structural impacts or interference with existing radio communications. Execulink has agreed to adjust its bandwidth to align with the current frequencies used at the site.

Council was informed that while the transmitter provides a less than ideal internet solution, it is essential for bridging the "last mile" of internet connectivity. This term refers to the final leg of the network that delivers internet services from the main communication lines to individual homes, especially critical in rural and underserved areas.

Brick proposed that council approve the project in principle, allowing him to finalize an agreement that includes the logistics of hydro mobility and site installation. He reassured the council that all details would be meticulously handled and brought back for final approval at the next council meeting scheduled for May 22.

Council unanimously supported the motion, moved by Councillor Myers and seconded by Councillor McCallum, to proceed with the agreement.
