Cow escapes owner by swimming off island in St. John River

One mischievous cow who decided she didn't want to give up summer quite yet is giving her owner a few headaches this week.

Wayne Morgan's unnamed bovine made her escape Oct. 16 when Morgan was moving his herd off Oromocto Island to take the cows back to the farm in Rusagonis. The cow had other ideas though and when she did, Morgan said little could be done.

"When they make up their mind they go right through you to get by you. You can't stop them," said Morgan.

The cow was later seen safe and sound in a hay field on the Lincoln side of the St. John River. But Morgan tried to lure her back using her calf, but to no avail.

New capture plan

Morgan has another plan.

"[Another farmer] is going to lend me a locking head gate that he has on a trailer. So we're just going to go down, park it in the field, put some feed in it and she'll catch herself," said Morgan.

However, recent efforts to locate in the cow in the large hayfield have proved fruitless.

When Morgan started telling people of his cow he was less concerned for the animal and more for the public.

Accident concerns

"The biggest concern I had was that Lincoln Road. There's a lot of traffic on that. The last thing I'd ever want to happen is for her to get up on the road and cause a major accident," said Morgan.

Morgan said a lot of people have called about the cow, asking how she is doing and offering to help with her retrieval. While Morgan is happy people are looking out for his cow he's amused at the attention the media is giving to her.

"For you guys to even bother with calling me up, wondering how my cow's doing, I mean that's quite something really," said Morgan.

Morgan said the cow has already proven she's capable of birthing high quality calves, so he's willing to give her a second chance. That doesn't mean there won't be consequences for the cow though.

"I'm going to guarantee you one thing, that she'll be vacationing somewhere else next summer," said Morgan.
