Crash leads to drunk driving charges

A 25-year-old Thunder Bay resident was charged with impaired driving and other offences Tuesday night after a sedan crashed on the city's outskirts. Provincial police said officers encountered the accused on Highway 61 near the Chippewa Road intersection around 7 p.m. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported, police said. In addition to the impaired-driving offence, the accused was charged with operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol reading of more than 80 milligrams, driving with an open container of liquor, driving without a vehicle permit and failing to surrender an insurance card, a provincial news release said on Wednesday. Police said the name of the accused driver is being withheld "due to concerns for the (driver's) well-being." The accused, who has been released from custody, is to appear in Thunder Bay court on June 26, the news release said. None of the charges have been proven in court.
