Crews fight garage fire in Charleswood

Heavy smoke fills the air Friday afternoon during a garage fire on Wexford Street in Charleswood.

Fire destroyed a garage in Winnipeg's Charleswood area on Friday.

Crews were called to 121 Wexford Street, off Roblin Boulevard, just after 11 a.m.

Thick, dark smoke filled the air above the area, just west of Assiniboine Park, but the fire was quickly brought under control.

The home's owner, Larry Bratland, said a neighbour knocked on his door to tell him about the fire.

He rushed out, saw a plume of smoke above the garage and flames inside.

"I was mad," Bratland said about seeing the fire. "I wasn't that scared. My wife was scared, but I was ticked off.

"I was like, this is great. I got a lot of good stuff in that garage."

But he also considers himself lucky.

"It could have been our house. And we probably couldn't have got out and our neighbour could have been in trouble, too," he said.

A vehicle and all the contents in the garage were lost.

Damage is pegged at $50,000.

No injuries were reported and there is no word on the cause.
