Crews rescue elderly man from house fire in Forest Lawn

An elderly man was rescued from a fire at a Forest Lawn home on Wednesday morning.

At about 8:45 a.m., a smoke alarm alerted him and his wife that their kitchen was ablaze at their house on the corner of 45th Street and 19th Avenue S.E., the fire department said in a release.

The woman ran outside and flagged down someone driving by, who stopped to help and called 911.

The passerby also tried to go into the house to rescue the woman's husband, who was still inside, but there was too much smoke.

When fire crews arrived, they were able to get the man out. He was assessed by EMS crews and taken to hospital.

Fire crews quickly put out the flames, which left the kitchen badly damaged. There was also smoke damage throughout the home, officials said.

A fire investigator is working to determine the origin and cause of the blaze.
