Cyclist in critical condition after collision with truck in north Edmonton

A 26-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after his bicycle was hit by a pickup truck in north Edmonton early Friday morning.

The collision happened around 2:45 a.m. on 97th Street just south of 144th Avenue.

The cyclist was allegedly struck by a 2014 Chevy Silverado, which was southbound on 97th Street, police said.

Investigators believe the cyclist was in the farthest east of three southbound lanes — the farthest lane from the shoulder.

The cyclist was not wearing a helmet, police said. He was brought to hospital with head trauma and is being cared for in the intensive care unit. He is in critical condition, police said.

The investigation continues but police don't believe speed or impairment were factors in the collision.

No charges are pending against the driver of the Silverado, who remained on scene until first responders arrived.
