A father of five says he got into a shootout outside his home as a result of an attempted car theft.

According to a Facebook post from Illinois' Winnetka Police Department, the incident occurred in the 400 block of Sheridan Road around 5 a.m. on Monday, May 27.

In an interview with ABC7 Chicago, the homeowner said he was sleeping when he heard his car starting outside. He ran out of his home and found three unidentified individuals trying to steal two of his vehicles, a Range Rover and a Maserati.

He told the outlet that the suspects managed to take his car keys from the garage after breaking in through his front office.

Noting that his five daughters were sleeping inside the home, he said he approached the suspects, asked them to stop, and threatened to shoot. He told ABC7 Chicago that one suspect shot at him from the street, and he returned fire.

The Winnetka Police Department confirmed in their update that a "preliminary investigation indicates that one of the offenders fired at the homeowner, and the homeowner returned fire."

While there were no reported injuries, two of the suspects reportedly fled the scene in an unknown vehicle while the other left the area on foot.

"I was surprised that somebody would fire a gun, and it does make me a little bit concerned. Definitely not something I would want to walk into or be anywhere near. But I never would expect it," he told ABC7 Chicago. "This is very unexpected I would probably just let them take the car and worry about it later."
