Mirren played Queen Elizabeth II in 2006's The Queen, a movie that earned her an Academy Award for her portrayal.

She also portrayed the Queen on stage in Stephen Daldry's The Audience in 2013, a West End play fictionalising the weekly meetings between the Queen and various British Prime Ministers between 1952 and 2013. She won an Olivier Award for her performance.

"I'm mourning along with the rest of my country, the passing of a great Queen," Mirren said (via Deadline). "I'm proud to call myself of the Elizabethan age. If there was a definition of nobility, Elizabeth Windsor embodied it."

The actress also took to Instagram where she shared a photo of the Queen and captioned the post: "I am proud to be an Elizabethan. We mourn a woman, who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility."

Queen Elizabeth was the longest-ruling monarch in British history, with King Charles III taking over immediately after her death. He paid a moving tribute to his mother in a statement.

King Charles' statement reads: "The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother."

Elizabeth II is survived by her four children – King Charles III, plus Anne, Princess Royal, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex – as well as eight grandchildren, including Princes William and Harry, and 12 great-grandchildren.
