As Daredevil Reboot Faces Creative Overhaul, Franchise Vet Urges Cynical Fans to ‘Have Some Trust’

TV’s erstwhile Kingpin is using his social media muscle to urge fans not to fret too much about the Daredevil reboot’s reported creative overhaul.

On Wednesday morning, THR.com reported that Kevin Feige and other Marvel execs — after reviewing footage that had been filmed for the first few episodes of Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Againreleased head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord from the project, as well as any upcoming directors that had been booked.

Feige & Co. reportedly decided that the reboot as envisioned by Corman and Ord — a legal procedural light on action and violence, and in which Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock didn’t suit up as Daredevil until Episode 4 — simply didn’t work. A search is now underway for replacements to “rethink the original intention of the show,” though some of the already-filmed scenes/episodes may be retained.

Vincent D’Onofrio, who like Cox is reprising his own role (Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin) from Netflix’s Marvel’s Daredevil series, did his best to set straight at least one fan who had suggested that the actor was regretting an April tweet celebrating the Daredevil: Born Again shoot.

“Unless you really know what’s going there’s a chance you could be wrong about this statement,” VD’O wrote back on X. “We are going to bring forward the best series we can. One we can be proud of.
Have some trust my friend, trust.”

D’Onofrio went on to share, “Every cool project I’ve been involved with has evolved constantly during pre- production, production and post. It’s just reported on these days as if it’s big news. It’s not. It’s simple a bunch of creatives doing their best to get it right. It’s a constant in this business. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Frankly I’d be worried if we were settling for less.”

Greenlit back in July 2022, Daredevil: Born Again has Cox again playing (a version of) Matt Murdock aka Daredevil, while D’Onofrio is reprising (a version of) supervillain Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. A Spring 2024 release date was very recently scrapped, and not rescheduled – quite understandably, in light of the aforementioned overhaul.

New details on Daredevil: Born Again — or at least what Corman and Ord had planned — recently emerged via a filing with the U.S. Copyright Office.

“Marvel Studios presents ‘Daredevil,’” the document reads, “in which longtime rivals Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk try to leave behind their darker alter-egos to serve the people of New York only to have their pasts catch up to them. In the first episode of the series we are reintroduced to the world of Daredevil.”

Other cast double-secret officially confirmed via the U.S. Copyright Office filing are Jon Bernthal (reprising his Netflix series role, or a version thereof, of Frank Castle aka Punisher), Margarita Levieva (Revenge) as Heather Glenn, Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark) as Daniel Blade, Sandrine Holt (House of Cards) as a “recast” Vanessa Fisk, Nikki M James (Severance) as Kirsten McDuffie, Genneya Walton (Never Have I Ever) as BB Uric, Clark Johnson (EvilBosch) as Cherry, Arty Froushan (Carnival Row) as Buck Cashman and Zabryna Guevara (New Amsterdam) as Sheila Rivera.
