David Corenswet’s Superman Really Needs a Coffee
Superhero fatigue is no match for Superman. Since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, the two filmmakers put all their time into changing the narrative from Please stop talking about The Flash’s box-office failure to Please spend every waking minute thinking about our next Superman film!
The plan seems to be working. After fans rampantly speculated on the identity of the next Superman for weeks, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director revealed this past summer that David Corenswet (We Own This City) is our new Man of Steel. A new photo on Gunn’s Instagram offers a first look at Corenswet in those classic blue-and-red tights. “Get ready,” Gunn captioned the photo. “Superman. 7.11.25.” The picture shows the actor putting on his boots as a giant pink orb shoots a beam of light on Metropolis. Though it’s only the first image, Corenswet’s Superman already looks like he needs a night off...or a coffee.
Gunn also revealed this past February that the upcoming Superman film would no longer include its Legacy subhead. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy,” he wrote on Threads. “By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN.” Since the film’s announcement, many more cast members have joined the project. After several rumors surrounding auditions, Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) won the role of Lois Lane. As for Lex Luthor? The role of one of Superman’s greatest foes eventually went to Nicholas Hoult (Renfield). Gunn’s DC Universe also found its Supergirl: Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) was added to the billing as Kal-El’s fellow Kryptonian Kara Zor-El. She’ll likely show up in Superman or another new DC project, according to Deadline, before starring in her own film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The latest Superman film will also feature Isabela Merced (The Last of Us) as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho, Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Matthew Lord, and Edi Gathegi (The Harder They Fall) as Mister Terrific.
Superman won’t hit theaters until July 11, 2025. So, now that we have our cast, can you all stop driving Gunn insane on X?
