Deadly crash closes 401 westbound
A dramatic collision early Sunday morning on Highway 401 in northwest Toronto left a man dead and two others in hospital, one with serious injuries.
The westbound portion of the thoroughfare, including collector and express lanes, as well as one eastbound lane were closed until mid-afternoon but have reopened.
The crash happened at Martin Grove Road, just east of Highway 427 and the Toronto airport, at around 6:45 a.m. A BMW heading west hit the 401's concrete dividing barrier, then ricocheted back into traffic, according to Sgt. Dave Woodford of the Ontario Provincial Police.
Almost immediately, a westbound tractor trailer plowed into the BMW, which caught fire and was engulfed in flames.
The BMW driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The tractor trailer's driver and passenger were taken to Sunnybrook hospital, one gravely hurt and the other with minor injuries.
Police had no immediate information on the identity of the man driving the BMW.
