German luxury car dealer Mechatronik trusted a 24-year-old employee with driving a $3 million Ferrari F40 to a nearby car show last week. That trip turned out to be an expensive one as the young driver crashed the vintage Ferrari in a tunnel, per a report by Bild.

The F40 was being driven to “Motorworld” in Böblingen but with just 11 miles remaining on the trip, the driver lost control in the middle of the Engelberg tunnel near Stuttgart. A police spokesman told Bild “It is currently unknown whether this was due to a technical defect or excessive speed.”

If you were to create a Mount Rushmore of supercars, the F40 would certainly deserve a spot. It is not the fastest, most beautiful, or most valuable Ferrari in existence. But it offers one of the rawest, and thrilling driving experiences imaginable. The 471 horsepower from the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 is fired directly to the rear wheels. Driver aids? Ha! The F40 doesn’t even have carpeting, so forget about any fancy electronic helpers to save you from your mistakes. What makes this car such a thrill is what makes it such a challenge for inexperienced drivers.

The driver in this crash did not suffer any injuries, but the same can’t be said for the car, which suffered extensive damage. However, this one will likely be repaired, given how special these cars are. Prior to the crash, this F40 was listed for sale with an asking price just north of $3.2 million. The wreck may reduce the value a bit, but even with the damage history, this F40 will remain one of the most desirable Ferrari automobiles ever made.
