Person dead after hit by Via Rail train at Danforth GO station

A person who was hit by a Via Rail train on Sunday morning at the Danforth GO station has died and service on the Lakeshore East line has resumed after a temporary disruption.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to George Eliadis, deputy commander of Toronto Paramedics Services. Paramedics received a call about the death at 9:35 a.m.

The coroner is investigating. The person's age and sex were not released.

Via train crew relieved of duties

Mariam Diaby, spokesperson for Via Rail based in Montreal, said an eastbound Via Rail train, number 62, travelling from Toronto to Montreal, struck the person and the collision occurred at the station itself.

"I can confirm there was an incident involving a trepasser with a Via Rail train," Diaby said Sunday.

She said the train crew has been temporarily relieved of its duties due to the death.

Metrolinx said GO train service on the Lakeshore East line to Danforth and Scarborough stations has resumed and GO trains are now serving all station stops.

GO Transit said there may be some delays and cancellations as service gets underway.

Anne Marie Aikins, spokesperson for Metrolinx, expressed condolences to the person's family on Twitter.
