Doaktown artist travels to remote Norwegian fishing village for rare opportunity
Along with his snowshoes, a New Brunswick artist is packing up his cameras and heading to the other side of the world for a unique opportunity.
Dillon Anthony, 29, has been selected for a popular artist residency in the small fishing village of Akkarfjord, on the island of Sørøya, in northern Norway.
"It's quite the honour," said the Doaktown resident.
"I'll be doing an artistic project up there that involves visuals and sound recording and studying all the local culture that is there."
Anthony said he believes his experience working with a variety of technologies, including camera and recording equipment in the backwoods of New Brunswick, helped land him a spot within the residency.
A heart for the outdoors
"It can be a challenge, but I'm able to document with a lot of independence in deep woods and remote spots," he said.
Anthony's portfolio includes photos and recordings of wildlife, landscapes, ocean views, and mountain vantages.
"The further the better," he said.
"I just love getting to spend as much time as I can outdoors."
The news of his Norway expedition, was quickly followed by a similar residency offer in northern Canada.
"I woke up to an email today [Tuesday] that I've been accepted to a 24-day expedition in the Yukon this summer where we're [doing] a canoe trip from Whitehorse to Dawson, and it's another group of artists in a remote residency."
Change of pace
The pursuit of capturing the great outdoors on camera isn't the only form of art Anthony has been working on.
The New Brunswick native, also a lifelong musician, is known for his ability to play several instruments. He also performs vocals with rock/blues band, Kill Chicago, based out of Fredericton.
He says his passions both on stage and in the great outdoors, are a bit of a balancing act.
"I mean, I love both, and it's pretty busy," said Anthony.
The local musician will be playing a show at the Capital Complex on March 10 and will fly out to the Arctic circle shortly after.
When he returns, Anthony will perform a stretch of shows, which include the East Coast Music Awards and a variety of other festivals.
"I fit it in, just between everything," he said.
