Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has responded to fan theories about The Master returning in the new season.

The Doctor's arch-enemy, like the the main Time Lord, almost comes back with a new face. After being played by Sacha Dhawan during the Jodie Whittaker era, fans have been wondering if and when The Master will be back again.

And with Davies previously calling Jinkx Monsoon's Maestro the "most powerful enemy yet" (not to mention the name meaning 'master of a skill'), there's speculation that the Drag Race star is the newest incarnation of The Master.

That's not the case, however, as the showrunner told Radio Times that, "It's nothing to do with the Master... it's completely different, a pantheon of gods that we’ve introduced.

"I did think when I named them Maestro that there was a chance that that might overlap. It causes speculation, which is fun, but the Master is kind of parked for the moment.

"There's been a lot of the Master recently, so it's time to start again and have a fresh start to the show."

He also teased that episode 4 will feature "possibly the strangest villain you'll ever see" and that episode 5 will have "great big ugly monsters, which are fantastic".

Meanwhile, new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa has talked about wanting a certain classic enemy to return before his tenure is over.

"I've heard chats about me not ever facing a Dalek," he said. "I'd be so angry if that's the case! By the time that I'm done with Doctor Who, I better have faced a Dalek."

Doctor Who will return for its 14th series on May 11 at midnight, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
