Douglas, Gulliver, MAST, Miami Country Day, Pine Crest, True North win district tennis titles

Team champions were crowned at various district tennis tournaments in Broward and Miami Dade counties, while No.1 singles and No.1 doubles district champs automatically qualified for state, which will be in Seminole County.

True North Classical Academy swept district team championships in boys’ and girls’ tennis.

The Titans district champion boys’ team edged Ransom Everglades 4-3 in the finals.

Qualifying for state were Alejandro Udaneta of Ransom Everglades at No.1 boys’ singles, Udaneta and Mikey Zoi of Ransom Everglades at No.1 boys’ doubles, Sasha Kilgour of Riviera Prep at No.1 girls’ singles and Alba Martinez and Daniella Chica of True North at No.1 girls’ doubles.

Regionals begin Tuesday. True North boys face Downtown Doral. Miami Country Day battles Ransom Everglades. On the girls’ side, True North versus Miami Country Day, and Divine Savior plays Riviera Prep.

More district tennis

Speaking of Miami Country Day, the Spartans boys’ tennis team won the district title for the 25th consecutive year. Quite an accomplishment.

Cliff Halliwell, Max Castanon and Antonio Moura also won individual singles championships, and Castanon and Oscar Bergier won the No.1 doubles championship, qualifying for the state tournament.

Another outstanding program, the Doral Academy boys’ and girls’ tennis teams swept district championships.

Of note, the Firebirds won districts at No.1 boys’ singles (Ezequiel De La Plaza), No.1 boys’ doubles (De La Plaza/Grimaldi), No.1 girls’ singles (Patricia Palencia) and No.1 girls’ doubles (Palencia/Seidle-Lubowitz). All of them advance to state.

In boys’ regionals on Tuesday, Doral Academy vs. Coral Gables. In girls’ regionals, Doral Academy vs. Ferguson.

Pine Crest boys’ and girls’ tennis teams also swept district championships.

Qualifying for state are district champs Juhnee See of Coral Springs Charter at No.1 girls’ singles, Adler Germinal of Calvary Christian at No.1 boys’ singles, Natasha Jerkunica and Michaela Landry of Pine Crest at No.1 girls’ doubles and Kenneth Chan and Krisztian Meszaros of Pine Crest at No.1 boys’ doubles.

BOYS: Team: 1. Pine Crest 19 points; 2. American Heritage-Plantation 12; 3. Coral Springs Charter 7; 4. Pompano Beach and Calvary Christian 4; 6. Cardinal Gibbons 2.

GIRLS: Team: 1. Pine Crest 20 points; 2. American Heritage-Plantation 11; 3. Coral Springs Charter 9; 4. Calvary Christian 4; 5. Cardinal Gibbons and Pompano Beach 2.

Gulliver Prep won the district team title in girls’ tennis with 20 points. MAST Academy was runner-up with 13 points. In boys district tennis, MAST won the team championship edging Gulliver Prep 17-15.

Qualifying for state: Sophia Varabyeva of Gulliver Prep at No.1 girls’ singles and at No.1 girls’ doubles with Mia Suarez. Also advancing to state: MAST’s Alessandro Sanchez, who won at No.1 boys’ singles and No.1 boys’ doubles with Felice Sebastian.

The Stoneman Douglas boys’ tennis team won the district championship. Dennis Oliveira won the No.1 singles title and later teamed with Daniel Platovsky to capture the No.1 doubles title. They automatically advance to state.

Baseball

In a battle of two of the top teams in Florida, the Doral Academy baseball team beat Archbishop McCarthy 9-2.

On Senior Night, the Miami Beach baseball team defeated Marathon 6-1. Senior right-hander Hernan Caceres earned a complete game victory, allowing no earned runs and striking out four.
