Driver flees after causing multi-car crash in Halifax
A Halifax man with an outstanding warrant has been arrested after a multi-car crash in north-end Halifax that took place around 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
Halifax police said an officer in a marked police car stopped on Russell Street observed a red Mazda sedan speeding southbound on Gottingen Street. They say it did not stop at the four-way stop at Russell Street.
Police said the officer then pulled on to Gottingen Street. That's when it's alleged the red Mazda increased its speed, continuing down the street and driving through a red light at Gottingen and North street.
Three vehicles were involved in the collision, one of which was parked.
The driver of the red Mazda fled on foot leaving behind a woman passenger in the car, police said.
He was chased by a bystander and was soon arrested. Police said the license plate on the red Mazda was reported stolen, not the vehicle.
19-year-old man arrested
Both the 19-year-old and his passenger were taken to hospital as a precaution.
The man was arrested for an outstanding warrant of arrest and is being held in custody until his court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.
Police anticipate the man will be charged with dangerous driving, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, obstruction and violations of court orders.
There were no serious injuries, police said. A woman who was in one of the vehicles involved told CBC News her hand was injured.
Gottingen Street was re-opened after several hours.
