Marriage and a family was not a give in for Duff Goldman.

“My parents had a really nasty divorce, and I was like, ‘Cool. I don’t ever want any of that, so I'm not getting married.' I was just like, 'I'm not into it,'" says the Food Network star, 48, whose new show The Elf on the Shelf: Sweet Showdown is airing now.

But then Duff met his now-wife Johnna, 30, online in 2016. "I was like, ‘Oh, that’s how you’re supposed to feel about people,’” he tells PEOPLE in this week's issue, on newsstands now.

Despite the fact that "neither of us were looking for anything serious," says Duff, the pair talked for seven hours on their first date. Two weeks later they took a spontaneous trip to Hawaii together. “It was obvious pretty quickly that we were really into each other,” he recalls.

Johnna's first impression of Duff was that he was "really cute and sweet," she says. "He’s just a kind, gentle soul. And he's been consistent at that."

As a writer, artist and flutist, Johnna shares Duff's passion for being creative. At home in Los Angeles, Duff makes toys for their daughter Josephine, 2, and practices the guitar for his band Foie Grock (a play on “foie gras” and “rock and roll”).

"I’m kind of a big kid,” he says. “I’m noisy. I’m messy. I’m building stuff constantly.”

After getting married in 2019 at the Natural History Museum in L.A. (where they had three wedding cakes!), Duff and Johnna have built an incredible life together.

“We have a one-in-a-million relationship,” says Duff. “I never thought I would have this kind of capacity for love.”

Their daughter only opened his heart more. "When you have a kid, you realize, 'Wow, I didn't know that was in there," he says. "It's wonderful."

More kids are not off the table. “It might happen. It might," he adds. "If it does, what a blessing. If not, we're in bliss."
