E. Jean Carroll attorney says lesson from trial is ‘lies are gonna catch up to you’
An attorney for E. Jean Carroll said the lesson from the recent trial with former President Trump was that “lies are gonna catch up to you someday.”
“I believe very strongly after today, that the lesson is that actually, no one’s above the law,” Shawn Crowley said in an interview on MSNBC Friday. “And that your behavior, and your statements, and your threats and your lies are gonna catch up to you someday.”
A jury ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million Friday for defaming Carroll in 2019, when he denied that he sexually assaulted her. The former president said he will appeal the verdict shortly after it was issued.
“Absolutely ridiculous! I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a Political Weapon.”
“They have taken away all First Amendment Rights,” he added. “THIS IS NOT AMERICA!”
A jury found last year that Trump sexually abused Carroll in the 1990s.
The case was focused on a written statement given to reporters and South Lawn comments the former president made in mid-2019, when Carroll came out with her accusation publicly. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled that Trump had defamed Carroll in September. The trial was to determine how much the former president owed the writer in damages.
“I think it was certainly very important to her to come forward and then to defend herself when he called her a liar and defamed her, but the reputation that she has now is among a very large group of people really, ruined by Donald Trump,” Crowley continued, speaking of Carroll.
“And what she really wants, is to be that journalist and advice columnist that she was before he lied about her,” Crowley added.
