EastEnders fans think they've worked out flashforward murder victim
EastEnders spoilers follow.
EastEnders' 38th anniversary special last night (February 20) ended with a previously-unannounced flash-forward to Christmas 2023, where six of the soap's most popular female characters – Denise, Sharon, Linda, Kathy, Suki and Stacey – were seen standing around a dead body in the Queen Vic.
We didn't see who the dead person was – just a glimpse of their shoes, and of a bit of their arm. And from those brief hints alone, fans think they've worked out who the murder victim is.
The episode saw that the poor soul was wearing cufflinks (or at least, one cufflink), and fans with good memories recalled that Phil Mitchell had worn those cufflinks before. Case closed, right?

Well, not necessarily. Some people think that other characters could end up buying the same cufflinks, or borrowing them, as it being Phil would be too easy.
Someone even thinks that the victim can't be Phil as the colour of the cufflinks don't line up with his birthstone, and that the victim must be someone born in November.
Here's what fans are saying. Do you think any of them are on the money?
If they've zoomed in on a cufflink that Phil has repeatedly clearly worn onscreen - and it actually is Phil in the end, then they are the most advanced trolls in TVLand and I doff my cap to them.#Eastenders

That's me occupied til crimbo.@bbceastenders
Who is it that's dead?
Why's Sharon in a wedding dress? best not be Phil.
That cufflink is a clue.
Please let it be Alfie annoying prat— Peej ⚽💙 (@pollyjo12) February 20, 2023
It's Phil's cufflink he wore it new years I think.
But as it's a wedding it could be the "something borrowed"— Pom Pom 🖤 it ain't a competition darlin 🌈🌟🍿 (@propergobby) February 21, 2023
we’ve already seen phil wear this one but tbh i think the cufflink in general is red herring bc it would be way too obvious. imo either lots of men will end up wearing one like this before christmas to throw us off or phil will lend it out before the wedding to someone else. https://t.co/gkoTXMXced

I also think, I think if it was Phil, Sharon would have a more affected expression. I think it must be a hateful person, I'd put my money on Nish or Keanu the fact that they like to take what doesn't belong to them, the cufflink could mean that they've got hold of that item.

If the cufflink is a clue, it rules out Phil, Ian and Jack - it appears to be Topaz. I’ve just checked and it’s the birth stone for November #EastEnders #ClutchingAtStraws pic.twitter.com/gbJZnFRKkF

Soap boss Chris Clenshaw has opened up more about the storyline – inspired by the classic 'Who killed Lucy?' plot, it turns that concept on its head by making the story a 'who is it?' rather than a 'whodunnit'.
Speaking specifically about what we saw last night, Clenshaw stated: "I'm not going to give anything away that the episode hasn't already given [away], but what I will say is there were clues in there. Did you look closely?

"I urge everyone to re-watch the scene and look at every detail. There's also a few treats in the scene if you look hard enough.
"What I'd also say is that a lot can happen in Walford between February and December – circumstances can change, relationships can change, loyalties can change – so what you may suspect now could be somewhat different as we make our way through 2023 and head towards Christmas."
EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
