Elderly woman pelted with apples in bizarre home invasion near Ottawa

Fire at flea market near Smiths Falls

Police are investigating a bizarre home invasion after someone broke into an elderly woman's home in Chesterville, Ont., and pelted the walls and ceiling with apples — some of which hit the startled resident.

"At this point we want to identify who sunk this low. The lady is in her 90s," OPP spokesman Const. Joel Doiron said in an interview Wednesday.

"I usually stay away from giving too much information on victims because we want to protect them, but in this case here that's sinking pretty low and of course when you get to a certain age, there are conditions that limit you in what you can do ... it's preying on somebody who's helpless."

The break in and home invasion happened around 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at a residence on South Street in the village of Chesterville, about 50 kilometres southeast of Ottawa, OPP said in a media release issued Wednesday.

A person or persons unknown forced their way in through a side door and then started throwing the fruit, which caused a mess and damaged a television set, Doiron said.

While some of the apples ended up striking the woman, she was not injured. The person or persons who broke in then left without taking anything.

Police weren't notified until days later when a relative checked on the woman, heard what happened and called police.

The investigation is ongoing. No suspect descriptions are available.
