Driver, 55, killed after crash involving 13-year-old in Elk Grove police chase identified

A man who was seriously injured when a 13-year-old allegedly driving a stolen car crashed during a police chase with Elk Grove officers has died, authorities said.

Police said the crash happened about 9:15 p.m. Monday when a vehicle described as stolen collided with the victim’s uninvolved vehicle at Laguna and Franklin boulevards. According to the Elk Grove Police Department, officers responded to a call for a reported stolen Toyota Sienna near Grant Line Road and Highway 99.

“Officers located the vehicle near Elk Grove Boulevard and Highway 99 and attempted to initiate a stop. The driver refused to stop and led officers on a pursuit,” police said.

Police lost sight of the minivan when it drove into a neighborhood east of the crash site before it exited westbound on Laguna Boulevard and struck a Nissan Rogue in the intersection. The driver of the small SUV was making a northbound turn onto Franklin Boulevard when he was struck, police said, causing the stolen vehicle to roll over.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, identified as a 13-year-old boy, was taken into custody, police said in a news release. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and later booked at juvenile hall. Police said he faces several charges including felony evading police resulting in serious injury or death.

The driver killed was identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Gregg Umipeg, 55, of Sacramento.
