Elle Fanning Went Full Flower Child in a Sheer Backless Dress at Cannes
Arnold Jerocki
Elle Fanning has taken a refreshingly breezy approach to the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
The 26-year-old actor has worn quite a few memorable looks on the Croisette over the years, typically wowing fans in elegant showstoppers like the 1940s-inspired Dior haute couture look she wore to the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood premiere in 2019. Just last year she continued to outdo herself on-and-off the red carpet, though her metal Paco Rabanne party dress was particularly unexpected—even after she opened the festival in a jaw-dropping sculptural gown by Alexander McQueen.
Comparatively, the sheer Gucci gown Fanning wore to the 2024 Cannes Film Festival closing ceremony was almost casual with its dainty daisy print and flouncy pleating. Fanning went in the complete opposite direction from last year’s structural looks with a particularly youthful piece from the Italian fashion house’s 2025 resort collection, which she styled with minimal jewelry, pastel blue eye shadow, and an effortless flicked-out lob.
Make no mistake, this look is just as appropriate for Cannes as Fanning’s previous showings. Though the styling of this flowing dress screams ’60s flower child, the entire look is elevated by the gown’s silhouette, which features a plunging neckline, dramatic caped sleeves, and a completely exposed back. There is simply not a single bad angle, making it the perfect option for the festival’s open red carpet. See for yourself:
Of course, this is not the first time Elle Fanning has worn spring florals at Cannes. Who could forget her Zuhair Murad couture look from 2016 or the Valentino gown she wore to the Les Miserables premiere in 2019? She even topped that look off with little flowers in her braided crown.
If her Zuhair Murad gown was giving Bridgerton and her Valentino moment evoked Little Woman, her latest take on florals further demonstrated just how versatile the concept can be. Quick, someone tell Miranda Priestly.
