Emmerdale stars Mark Charnock and Zoe Henry have spoken about a big episode coming up for their characters Marlon Dingle and Rhona Goskirk.

Marlon and Rhona were recently announced for a special edition of the ITV soap, which will break from the show's usual format.

The scenes focus on a dinner party as Marlon and Rhona socialise with Tom and Belle King.

Marlon and Rhona's marriage has faced challenges in recent months due to Rhona's fight for baby Ivy. Meanwhile, Emmerdale has been exploring issues of domestic abuse and coercive control in Tom and Belle's relationship.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press about what's to come, Zoe explained: "Rhona's disgraceful during the dinner party! All I will say is we get very drunk. You know that saying, 'Sober man's mind, drunken man's tongue'. It's awful.

"We shot the whole episode in two days and it was like filming a play. There are only eight characters in the episode and it's just great. But Rhona and Marlon are disgusting that day!"

Mark added: "All I can say about it is I've never done anything like that episode before. It has a very unusual structure and it was a fantastic couple of days filming it. There's a lot going on in that episode."

The next big hurdle for Marlon and Rhona's marriage is expected to centre around next week's tense court scenes.

Rhona has agreed to give a statement defending her ex-husband Gus Malcolms at his sentencing hearing. Gus, who's hoping this will lead to a lighter sentence, has promised Rhona and Marlon long-term access to baby Ivy in return.

When the day of the hearing arrives next week, it's clear that Rhona is still weighing up exactly what she wants to say.

Zoe explained: "Marlon and Rhona have been through a lot already, but going forward, it's not pretty. The fallout from the stuff in court is pretty shocking. It takes Rhona by surprise. It capsizes them as a couple."

Mark agreed: "It spins off in a real right angle. Without giving anything away, something happens in the second bit of courtroom drama that means one of them may or may not overreact and take it the wrong way.

"I don't want to say which one of them it is, but let's just say it's one of them."

Emmerdale's producer Laura Shaw announced the special episode earlier this month.

She told Digital Spy and other press at the time: "We've got a bit of a special episode coming up, where we do what everyone seems to like by stepping away from our usual Emmerdale format and doing things a little bit differently.

"It centres around a dinner party – mainly focusing on Belle, Tom, Marlon and Rhona.

"We'll see what's going on in their relationships, but through the special way that we've done it, we show how what you see in public is not necessarily what you see behind closed doors. So I'll leave you to work out what that might be.

"It's not the only special episode we've got planned for this year, but I don't think I'm allowed to tell you anything else! There are other special episodes planned that are slightly different."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
