Endangered frogs featured on new Canada Post stamps

Canada Post has released a new stamp series that raises awareness about two of the country’s endangered frog species.

The Oregon spotted frog and Fowler’s toad, featured on the stamp, are both on Canada’s list of endangered species due to pressures from human activity, invasive species, and pollution.

The nocturnal Fowler’s toad (Anaxyrus fowleri) transforms from a tadpole swimming in shallow rocky or sandy shoreline pools and ponds to its mostly terrestrial life in sandy places such as dunes and beaches, where it feeds primarily on insects. The male has a shrill call, amplified through inflation of its vocal sac. Loss of habitat from human activity, invasive organisms and pollutants has put the Fowler’s toad on Canada’s endangered list. Restricted in Canada to a small population inhabiting the north shore of Lake Erie, in Ontario, they need our immediate intervention to save them from disappearing from Canada forever. Fowler’s toads (Anaxyrus fowleri) are exclusively found along the north shore of Lake Erie in Ontario, often on sandy beaches and dunes. The toads are nocturnal and breed in shallow ponds, pools, and marshes.

Named for the black blotches that cover its back, the Oregon spotted frog (Rana pretiosa) favours shallow wetlands, where it consumes a steady diet of insects. Unlike most other frogs, its eyes are angled upward, making it easy for it to see above water while remaining almost entirely submerged. Loss of habitat from human activity, invasive organisms and pollutants has put the Oregon spotted frog on Canada’s endangered list. Restricted in Canada to a small population found only in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley, they need our immediate intervention to save them from disappearing from Canada forever. Oregon spotted frogs (Rana pretiosa) are only found in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley in Canada.

Stateside, the California population has vanished but the frogs continue to thrive in Oregon and parts of Washington.

Introducing our newest stamps, featuring two endangered #frog 🐸 species found in Canada – the Oregon spotted frog (Rana pretiosa) and Fowler’s toad (Anaxyrus fowleri). Loss of habitat from human activity, invasive organisms and pollutants has put these two species on Canada’s endangered list. Restricted now to a few small, scattered populations, they need our immediate intervention to save them from disappearing from Canada forever. Webbing on their hind feet that extends to the tip of their toes makes them supreme swimmers, and upward-angled eyes help them see above the water while almost completely submerged.
