Justin Timberlake Releases 'Selfish' as He Announces Upcoming Album — Watch the Music Video

The song — his first solo release in six years — comes ahead of the March 15 release of the singer's album 'Everything I Thought It Was'

Justin Timberlake is back on the solo-music scene.

The 42-year-old singer dropped his new single "Selfish" — and its accompanying music video, directed by Bradley J. Calder — on Thursday, announcing the release on Instagram.

"Selfish," which Timberlake first teased on Instagram Friday, is his first new music as a solo artist in six years following the release of his 2018 album Man in the Woods.

It's a midtempo ballad with those familiar R&B sounds that was a signature of Timberlake's early work. Written by Louis Bell, Henry Walter, Theron Makiel Thomas and Amy Allen, the song — and accompanying — shows off the singer's vulnerable side.

The song comes ahead of the release of his new album Everything I Thought It Was, which is scheduled to drop March 15.

In April 2023, Timbaland revealed in an interview with Variety that he and Timberlake had some new material they'd been cooking up to mark the artist's first release since 2018's Man of the Woods.

"We just finished up and everything sounds great," said the superstar producer, 51. "Now it's really on him how and when he envisions it to come out, but it's done and it's coming."

As Timbaland explained, the new material with Timberlake is reminiscent of his 2006 Grammy-winning sophomore solo album FutureSex/LoveSounds, which has remained a fan favorite over the last two decades.

"It's fun Justin," the producer said, teasing that it's "just giving you what you expect from us,"

Timbaland said, "Music is a young sport — of course, we've both seen a lot of life, but you have to bring out the 13-year-old kid again, you know?" He added, "We had songs that maybe were too complicated, so we said we want it to feel like FutureSex part two, so we did songs that will fit that."

In the year leading up to the new solo album, 2023 has been full of musical milestones for Timberlake. Back in September, he and *NSYNC released their first song together in over 20 years: "Better Place," for his movie Trolls Band Together.

The quintet — Timberlake plus JC ChasezLance BassChris Kirkpatrick and Joey Fatone — reunited in the studio to record the song the infectious pop banger — calling back the ‘90s and ‘00s icons’ early boy band sound, while giving it a contemporary update with a disco-pop beat.

Each member, who also has parts in the animated movie, gets their own moment to shine, too, while Timberlake carries the chorus.

Although the “It's Gonna Be Me” band has reunited in the past — teaming up for their Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in 2018 and in honor of Timberlake’s video vanguard award at the 2013 MTV VMAs — this was the first time they’ve ever dropped new music.

Last year, Timberlake also teamed up with Timbaland and Nelly Furtado again on the single "Keep Going Up." It marked the three's first collaboration after releasing the chart-topping "Give It to Me" in 2007.
