Powerful windstorm uproots trees, cuts power to thousands in Ottawa

Strong winds and heavy rain battered the National Capital Region Sunday, knocking out power to thousands of people in west Ottawa and uprooting trees across the city.

Multiple flights were either delayed or cancelled late Sunday afternoon at the Ottawa airport, where wind gusts of 97 km/h were recorded.

Hydro Ottawa reported more than 10,000 customers were without power in and around the areas of Stittsville and Kanata.

There were still around 50 customers without power in Bells Corners as of 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning for Ottawa, advising residents to take cover as a cold front swept across central and eastern Ontario. The warning ended at 6:49 p.m.
