ER doctors top earners at Winnipeg health authority in 2013

Emergency room physicians were paid the most at the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority last year, earning more than senior officials.

The WRHA's annual public compensation report, released on Thursday, shows that 13 of the health authority's 14 highest paid employees in 2013 are ER doctors.

Dr. Ronald Scrapneck earned almost $582,000 last year, making him the WHRA's top earner. He was followed by Dr. Werner Van Dyk, who was paid more than $548,000.

The WRHA's chief executive officer, Arlene Wilgosh, was 18th on the list with a salary of more than $353,000.

The health authority is required to release information about employee compensation under Manitoba's Public Sector Compensation Disclosure Act.

Its report outlines the wages of almost 10,000 employees, including doctors, nurses, technicians and administrative staff.

Colin Craig, the Prairie regional director with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, accused the WRHA of having more administrative staff while taking resources away from front-line staff.

"When you tie up resources with communications, spinners and admin staff, I mean, those are people that aren't providing health-care services directly," he said.

The WRHA has an annual budget of $2.6 billion, about 75 per cent of which is spent on wages and benefits, according to a spokesperson.
