Everything to Know About Jennifer Lopez's “Kiss of the Spider Woman” Movie Musical, Co-Produced by Ben Affleck

Affleck and Matt Damon are producing via their Artists Equity banner, alongside 11 other producers including Lopez

Ben Affleck has a connection to Jennifer Lopez's first big movie musical.

The actress and singer, 54, recently wrapped production on Kiss of the Spider Woman, the upcoming movie musical for which she also serves as a co-producer alongside Affleck, 51, and 12 others, including Matt Damon under his and Affleck's Artists Equity production banner.

Among the other producers listed on the Bill Condon-written and directed project are Lopez's producer friend Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and longtime manager Benny Medina, per IMDb.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is an adaptation of the 1993 Broadway musical by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Terrence McNally, which in turn was based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig. The story was previously adapted for a 1985 film starring William Hurt, Raul Julia and Sônia Braga.

Variety confirmed Lopez's casting back in December 2023 and reported that the Hustlers actress would portray Aurora, a fantasy woman conjured up by Luis Molina, a gay hairdresser imprisoned in Argentina circa 1981 along with Valentin Arregui Paz, a Marxist. As a form of escapism during his sentence, Molina dreams of Aurora in classic movies, including her role as a spider woman.

Filming, according to Variety, began in New Jersey in April.

"And just like that … Kiss of the Spider Woman is wrapped!" Tonatiuh, 31, who plays Molina, wrote on Instagram Sunday, June 16. "This has been one of the most rewarding and beautiful experiences of my life."

He added, "Thank you @billcondon3 @tomkirdahy @barryjayj @diegoluna_ @jlo @artistsequity @christogram611 @erikasanz @shaluga111 and the rest of the incredible folks in the cast and crew for making NY and Uruguay a blast. 🧡"

Lopez’s role in this new version of Kiss of the Spider Woman will mark her debut in a movie musical and comes more than 30 years after the Broadway show of the same name, which won seven Tony Awards from 11 nominations and starred Chita Rivera as Aurora.

In her 2023 Chita: A Memoir, Rivera, who died at 91 years old this past January, said of her Tony-winning role, "I’m often asked how playing Death changed my view of my mortality."

"At the time of Kiss, I said that I now think of the Grim Reaper as someone like the Spider Woman: warm, comforting, merciful," Rivera added. "The show had taken the sting out of it in the best way: through a musical.  Now, as I face the autumn — well, make that the winter — of my years, I would have to say that it’s a Big Question Mark."

Lopez, meanwhile, also recently wrapped the upcoming Affleck-co-produced movie Unstoppable before recent reports of a strain in their marriage.

Of Kiss of the Spider Woman, the multihyphenate star said last month on Live with Kelly and Mark that she's "in fighting shape" due to her part in the project.

“I just finished a movie called Kiss of the Spider Woman, where it was all singing and dancing, which was equal parts exhilarating and exhausting," she said, per Entertainment Weekly. "Now, I’m ready to go. I’m the thinnest I’ve ever been. I’m in fighting shape right now."

Kiss of the Spider Woman, which also stars Diego Luna, does not yet have an official release date.
