Ex-Kimmirut teacher's trial on sex charges postponed a week

The trial for a former Kimmirut, Nunavut, teacher accused of sex-related crimes has been postponed until next week due to the illness of a Crown prosecutor.

Phillip Flynn is charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation. The charges were laid in 2013 but the incidents are alleged to have happened in January 2003 and April 2004.

His trial was supposed to get underway Monday in Iqaluit and the accused, the lawyers and a witness were in court.

But crown prosecutor Myriam Girard became ill last week and her colleague Zachary Horricks took over the case last Wednesday. He told the court Monday that he had not had enough time to properly prepare and asked Justice Susan Cooper to adjourn Flynn's trial for a week.

The trial is now scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 9.
