Excavator rips through north Edmonton grocery, thieves steal ATM

Neighbours plan 'cash mob' after ATM bandits target corner store

Thieves, or a thief, used an excavator to smash through the wall of a small corner grocery in north Edmonton early Tuesday to snatch the store's ATM.

The theft happened after 3 a.m.

Security video shows the backhoe exploding through the wall of Sherbrooke Grocery, before someone corralled the ATM and dragged it out of the store.

The store, at 127th Street and 121st Avenue, had no security camera outside the store.

The store owner, who lives in the building, did not learn of the theft until she was called by her security company.

"It was like a movie," said Michelle Suh.

Nothing else was taken, she said.

Suh believes the excavator was taken from a nearby construction site.

Police say ATM thefts are growing in frequency in the Edmonton area and rural Alberta. RCMP in rural Alberta have investigated more than two dozen such thefts this year.
