Exclusive: Coastal Carolina to make $1.1 million playing UCLA. Here are the details

Coastal Carolina will be on the road for its 2023 football season opener.

The Chants will play UCLA in their first game under new head coach Tim Beck, and CCU will be well compensated for making the trek to California to play the Bruins.

Coastal Carolina will receive $1.1 million from UCLA for their away contest, per a Freedom of Information Act request filed by The Sun News. In total, the University will make $1 million for playing its non-conference schedule this season.

CCU’s away game against Army West Point will also net the University $200,000, but the total profit from the entire contract is zero.

The agreement states the two schools will play four games against one another, each paying the other $400,000 over the deal’s life. The first game of the agreement occurred September 3, 2022, which the Chants won, and CCU and Army West Point are expected to face off in October of 2026 and 2027.

The home team for each game will also receive all of the revenue from television and radio rights, except for the away team’s live radio broadcast.

CCU will not be paid for every non-conference game it plays this year. Jacksonville State University and CCU signed a two-game agreement in Feb. 2022 for the 2023 and 2024 seasons too, but neither team will pay the other for the games.

The first matchup will be played in Conway, the second at Jacksonville State and the away team will receive 300 complimentary tickets for each game. Failure to honor the agreement by either school could result in a half-million-dollar penalty.

Coastal Carolina will also pay Duquesne University $300,000 to face off in Conway at Brooks Stadium.

Duquesne was originally supposed to play the Chants in September 2020, but the game was canceled due to an outbreak of coronavirus, the website FBSchedules reported. This season’s match-up, Duquesne went 4-7 in 2022, will be the rescheduling of that contest.

CCU will also pay for Duquesne’s hotel reservations, a total of 50 rooms according to the contract.

Kick-off for the UCLA game will be 10:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on ESPN. CCU’s showdown with Jacksonville State will start at 7 p.m. EST, September 9 at Brooks Stadium and can be streamed on ESPN+. Coastal will also play Duquesne at home Sept. 16 starting at 7 p.m. EST also on ESPN+.

The Chants match-up against Army will be at West Point Nov. 18. Kick-off is noon EST and will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.
